5 ways humans interact with the environment
1. Air Pollution
Air pollution is the result of human activity that changes the composition of air. It can have detrimental effects on human health, but it doesn't affect only us; plants are also affected negatively as well. In recent years, research has shown that air pollution may be responsible for causing many diseases including cancer, heart disease, asthma, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD). This is due to the fact that these pollutants have been linked to various respiratory issues.
2. Climate Change
Climate change refers to any significant change in weather patterns of a particular region over time. There are two major types of climate change - natural and man-made. Natural factors include solar radiation, wind speed, humidity, precipitation, ocean currents, volcanic eruptions, and El Niño/La Niña events. Man-made factors include pollution, deforestation, urbanization, and agriculture.
3. Soil Degradation
Soil degradation occurs when soil loses its ability to hold water and nutrients. As we develop our land, topsoil becomes compacted or eroded away. This causes poor drainage, increased groundwater tables, excessive salt accumulation, and reduced oxygen levels. These problems lead to decreased soil quality and eventually, if left untreated, cause desertification.
4. Water Pollution
Water pollution can impact human health in different ways. Some people may develop skin conditions from exposure to waste water; others may suffer from gastrointestinal issues like diarrhea and vomiting. Exposure to toxic chemicals like mercury can cause neurological damage and affect brain development in children.
5.Noise Pollution
Noise pollution has many negative effects on human health, including hearing loss from loud sounds that exceed safe limits. There is strong evidence that noise causes cardiovascular diseases like hypertension and heart attack, and stress-related mental disorders like insomnia and depression.
