1. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), India

The party was founded in 2013 by Arvind Kejriwal, who was then Chief Minister of Delhi, and Prashant Bhushan. In the 2014 Indian general elections, AAP won 67 out of 70 seats in Delhi state assembly election. The party had contested 15 national level election including Lok Sabha Elections 2019. It received maximum votes in Punjab. But failed to win any seat.

2. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), India

It is the world's largest political party and a major force in Indian politics. The BJP was formed in 1980 after the break-up of the Jan Sangh, a coalition of several regional parties. It led a National Front government between 1998 and 2004, and again between 2014 and 2019. At the time of writing, the party is ruling the states of Assam, Goa, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and West Bengal.

3. Communist Party Of India (Marxist) (CPIM), India

It is one of the oldest communist parties in India. It was founded in 1964 by former members of the erstwhile Praja Socialist Party. CPIM is today the third largest party in the country. It was a member of the United Progressive Alliance until May 2012, when it left the alliance over differences regarding the Congress' role in the Commonwealth Games scam. Later, it joined the opposition NDA. In the 2016 Assembly elections, CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front won majority of the seats in West Bengal.

4. Biju Janata Dal (BJD), India

It is a major constituent party of the Indian National Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA). The party was founded in 1982 by Gopabandhu Das, former leader of the Janata Party. He resigned from active politics in 1987, remaining president until his death in 2003. In the 2009 elections, BJD was reelected with a thumping majority. Currently, Rameshwar Ojha is serving as the chief minister.

5. Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), India

It is currently one of the two major political parties in the state of Tamil Nadu in southern India. DMK was founded in 1956 by C.N Annadurai, a freedom fighter, politician, philanthropist and the first Deputy Prime Minister of India. The party was initially a faction of the Justice Party (later renamed as Dravida Munnetral Katchi), founded by M. Karunanidhi. DMK was initially a regional party, whose base were Tamils in South India. However, the party soon expanded its base beyond Tamil Nadu and became a pan-Indian party. After many years of being a strong regional player, in 2006 DMK entered the Indian national parliament and currently holds 18 seats.

6. Indian National Congress (INC), India

It is India's second largest federal political party. INC was founded in Bombay on 5 August 1885 by Motilal Nehru, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi and others. INC is currently the preeminent party in the northern Indian states of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Mizoram, Meghalaya, and Tripura. Following Independence, INC played a dominant role in the governments of independent India. Since 1952, the party has been in power continuously except for five years (1957–62). INC lost its parliamentary majority at the 1984 General Election, but returned to power in 1989 under Chandra Shekhar. INC continued in power under P V Narasimha Rao, who was President of the party between 1991 and 1996. INC was defeated in the 2004 General Election. INC regained power in 2009. INC is the current ruling party in the union cabinet since May 2014.

7. Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), India

It is an Indian regional political party based in Andhra Pradesh. Founded in 1999, TRS is headed by K Chandrasekhara Rao and represents people from the Rayalaseema region, including parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh. TRS won 29 out of 119 seats in the 2014 Indian general election. It won 44% of total votes cast in the state of Andhra Pradesh.
